Dear fellow 46ers and like-minded
lovers of the mountains:
The Grace Peak Committee of the
46ers has been quietly working toward an ambitious goal since
about the year 2000. We envision having two of the High Peaks
formally renamed – East Dix as "Grace Peak"
in memory of Grace Hudowalski , and South Dix as "Carson
Peak" in memory of Russell Carson. We believe –
and many agree with us – that these individuals fully
merit such a high honor. Brief biographies of Grace and Russ
may be accessed via the links to the left hand side of the
site.
It is necessary to demonstrate
strong local support for the proposal before such a name change
can occur. The Grace Peak Committee has taken the following
steps to build this support:
•
presenting audiovisual information sessions to interested
groups, including the town
councils
of Keene and North Hudson, chapters of the Adirondack Mountain
Club, and
others,
to explain the proposal;
•
writing newspaper articles to raise awareness of the proposal;
•
resurrecting and running the Grace Hudowalski Essay Contest
and
•
soliciting letters of support from people who agree with the
proposal.
We are trying to obtain as many
letters of support as we can, and we need your help. We encourage
you to send a signed letter indicating in your own words your
support for the proposal and for what reasons, to the following
address:
